AFC Energy reveals the success of ammonia fuel technology project.
AFC Energy PLC (AIM:AFC, OTC:AFGYF) will later on Wednesday showcase positive results of tests using the company’s novel ammonia cracker technology to improve the combustion and emissions of ammonia-fuelled maritime engines.
Chief technology officer Dr Mike Rendall will, later today, present the opening keynote speech at the MariNH3’s 2024 industry conference.
AFC’s ammonia cracker technology has operated successfully alongside a MAHLE Powertrain engine, primarily fueled by ammonia, the company said, and, using an 80:20 ratio of ammonia to cracked gas, the engine demonstrated improved performance compared to using ammonia alone.
The cracker generated hydrogen on-demand, which, when blended with additional ammonia, provided a stable fuel gas stream to the engine injection system, it added.
These initial trials showed stable engine performance with increased efficiency and reduced emissions.
Adam Bond, AFC chief executive, said in a statement:
Ammonia cracking is a core part of AFC Energy’s two division technology platform approach to supporting the hydrogen value chain.
“The results released today at the MariNH3 conference are a testament not only to the entire project team but also to the growing opportunities emerging through the adoption of clean ammonia as the world’s leading decarbonised fuel vector.
“Our ammonia cracking technology affords a leading platform seeking to support production of low-cost hydrogen for combustion or fuel cell applications, both on board vessels and on land.”
AFC’s ENTICE project, which includes partners such as MAHLE Powertrain and Nottingham University, aims to continue system integration and testing across various operational parameters until March 2025.
The company is also exploring applications of the technology for land-based hydrogen production and in fueling large off-road mining equipment.
