AFC Energy signs ammonia engine deal with Komatsu
AFC Energy PLC (AIM:AFC, OTC:AFGYF, FRA:QC8), the AIM-listed hydrogen energy group, has signed a joint development agreement with Komatsu and its affiliate Industrial Power Alliance to integrate ammonia-to-power technology into heavy industrial engines.
The agreement, valued at approximately $2 million, subject to milestone delivery, will see AFC Energy’s proprietary ammonia cracker adapted to work with a Komatsu internal combustion engine.
The companies aim to assess the feasibility of creating a new ammonia-fuelled engine platform for large-scale deployment.
Komatsu, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction and mining equipment with a market capitalisation of around $43 billion, is seeking sustainable alternatives to diesel for its global equipment fleet.
AFC Energy said the project will demonstrate that liquid ammonia can be used to power industrial engines with minimal modification, opening up a significant new market for its technology.
John Wilson, chief executive of AFC Energy, said:
We are delighted to have signed this JDA with Komatsu, whose commitment to AFC Energy’s proprietary ammonia cracker technology provides further industry peer validation
He added:
This JDA further underpins our strategy to deliver commercially viable hydrogen-to-power solutions without government subsidy.
Taisuke Kusaba, chief technology officer of Komatsu, said:
We are very pleased to be working with AFC Energy and its leading ammonia cracking technology to further explore measures to decarbonise our fleets of equipment.
AFC Energy develops hydrogen generation and conversion technologies aimed at reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as construction, transport and industrial manufacturing.
