Ammonia – Largest eco vehicle carrier Höegh Sunrise makes first call at Jebel Ali
Höegh Sunrise Jebel Ali marks a milestone in sustainable shipping with zero-carbon ready design and record automotive capacity.
Dubai: The MV Höegh Sunrise Jebel Ali has made its maiden call at the port, establishing itself as the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly vehicle carrier.
Built with a zero-carbon ready design, the Aurora-class vessel is capable of operating on future fuels such as ammonia and methanol, positioning it at the forefront of sustainable shipping in the automotive sector.
With a capacity to transport 9,100 cars, the vessel reduces carbon emissions per vehicle by 58 percent compared to current industry standards. On its first voyage to Jebel Ali, the vessel carried 1,200 vehicles from Europe, marking a significant milestone in Dubai’s growing role as a global automotive hub.
A plaque ceremony commemorated the arrival of Höegh Sunrise Jebel Ali at the port, attended by Ahmed Badri, Vice President General Cargo & RoRo at DP World GCC, and Atanu Maiti, Regional Head of Commercial Operations at Höegh Autoliners for the Middle East, Africa, India and Europe.
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director, DP World GCC, stated that,
The Höegh Sunrise is a leader in sustainable shipping, and her arrival reinforces Dubai’s role as a global hub for the automotive industry.
“By handling the largest and most advanced car carriers, we are enabling the transition to greener supply chains while supporting more than 940 automotive companies based in Jafza.”
DP World has handled a record 1.3 million vehicles in Dubai in 2024, representing a 53.6 percent increase from the previous year. To meet growing demand, the port expanded its automotive logistics capacity by launching a 2.6 million square foot vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4.
Additionally, plans are underway to develop the world’s largest auto market, spanning 20 million square feet, further solidifying Dubai’s position in global automotive trade.
The arrival of Höegh Sunrise Jebel Ali underscores the commitment of DP World and Höegh Autoliners to sustainability, operational efficiency, and the transition to greener supply chains in the automotive sector.
