The Minister of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas, together with the Governor of Río Negro, Arabela Carreras; and the president of Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) for the Latin American region, Agustín Pichot, signed a Framework Agreement that begins prospecting and feasibility tasks for green hydrogen projects in Río Negro.

Within the framework of the Green Productive Development Plan, green hydrogen is presented for Argentina as an opportunity to develop competitive suppliers throughout the chain, create new jobs and significantly increase exports while protecting the local and global environment.

Matías Kulfas, The Minister of Productive Development:

The environmental problem, the issue of climate change has every day concrete responses from technology, from science, from industrialization, and requires an effort of political organization.

“It is clear that technical solutions will be implemented if we achieve a good articulation between national and provincial governments, and the private sector, and that together we form a true virtuous circle that allows us to advance towards this great objective that is Green Productive Development.” Kulfas assured.

“I thank Fortescue Future Industries and the ambassador for this concrete proposal to start down a path that has to do with research, and so that Argentina and the province of Río Negro can be relevant players in this true technological and productive revolution that is going to take place on the international scene ”, he added.

“I am strongly optimistic about this decade, despite the difficulties, the world is going to a place where Argentina has everything to offer, its strategic natural resources, the clean energies that the world needs, it has its industries, it has science and technology, and knowledge economy.”

“This is not achieved magically but with a lot of work, with daily efforts and interacting in this way, between the public and private sectors, with scientific-technological organizations, with companies that have these capacities to advance in this direction ”, he highlighted the minister.

Arabela Carreras, Governor thanked:

The Fortescue company and the teams of the Ministry of Productive Development and Río Negro that have been protagonists in the previous process and that will have the responsibility of giving legislative continuity to this beginning that we are taking”.

And pointed out: “We have already been working on general hydrogen and on green hydrogen in particular with a team of scientists who have been developing research for many years, and with the expectation that it will reach the necessary stage of technological maturity at some point”.

The meeting was also attended by the Australian Ambassador to Argentina, Brett Hackett; the Secretary of Industry, Ariel Schale; and, virtually, Fortescue Future Industries CEO Julie Shuttlewort.

“To reach an agreement like the one signed today takes more than a shared vision and commitments towards the future, it is about recognizing that, in many aspects, the future is already here. There are few countries better positioned than Argentina and Australia to meet both domestic and global demand for clean energy, ”highlighted Ambassador Hackett.

“This will be beneficial for both countries but it is just as important and will have benefits worldwide. I believe that, in addition to this project itself, a true research and science partnership will also emerge, taking advantage of the scientific excellence of our two countries, “he added.

Meanwhile, Pichot assured: “As Argentine and president of FFI, I am proud to celebrate this framework agreement to explore possible green industrial projects in our country.

Argentina and the Province of Rio Negro have great potential in renewable energy, an attractive port infrastructure and a strategic location. FFI wants to develop the renewable energy and green hydrogen market in the country and, in this way, contribute positively to its decarbonisation ambitions ”.

Green hydrogen technology, which is increasingly attracting more concrete interest as an energy transition strategy, implies a great opportunity for Argentina because it has a broad competitive advantage to generate renewable energy from wind with good winds in Patagonia, hydroelectric with important pending projects and also solar because of the radiation levels in the NOA.

The recovery of IMPSA, which is a strategic supplier to the energy sector, and the work of the national government in the development of suppliers for the renewable industry that are exporting today show that the experience could be repeated and multiplied if the focus is placed on the long-term growth that would have the equipment for power generation and for the hydrogen chain.

Green hydrogen is the purest energy source in the world and has the potential to replace up to three-quarters of global emissions if technology is improved at scale.
