Aston University wins 2025 Hydrogen Award for the Wolfson Low Carbon Hydrogen Centre

  • Aston University’s Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) has won the ERA Partner Universities’ Award
  • It recognises the impact of the Wolfson Low Carbon Hydrogen Centre, which is dedicated to exploring hydrogen production from biomass conversion
  • Dr Amirpiran Amiri, lead of the hydrogen and fuel cells research line at EBRI, accepted the award.

Aston University’s Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) has won the ERA Partner Universities’ Award in the 2025 Hydrogen Awards.

This annual award recognises outstanding research and innovation in hydrogen, such as an exciting new technology or breakthrough as a result of research, or if an institution has partnered with business to apply its research to launch a new product or process. It is open to Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) partner universities in the Midlands – Aston University, the University of Birmingham, Cranfield University, Keele University, the University of Leicester, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and the University of Warwick – and the British Geological Survey.

Aston University won the award for the Wolfson Low Carbon Hydrogen Centre, which is pioneering research into sustainable hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation to accelerate the UK’s transition to a net zero future. The Centre, which opened recently, is dedicated to exploring hydrogen production from biomass conversion.

The recognition highlights Aston University’s EBRI leadership in low-carbon solutions and its commitment to addressing the decarbonisation of energy and industry, which is one of the most pressing challenges of current times.

The award was presented to Dr Amirpiran Amiri, lead of the hydrogen and fuel cells research line at EBRI, by Kevin Kendall, the co-founder of Adelan, a UK hydrogen technology company. The awards ceremony was held as part of the 2025 Hydrogen Conference at Conference Aston in Birmingham.

Dr Amiri said:

We are delighted to receive the Hydrogen Award 2025. This recognition is a tribute to the hard work of our team and the vision behind the Wolfson Low Carbon Hydrogen Centre.

“Hydrogen will play a central role in enabling a clean energy future, and our work is dedicated to unlocking its potential through innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions. Winning this award not only shines a spotlight on Aston’s research excellence but also motivates us to take the next step, expanding our work into industrial applications, circular hydrogen systems, and digital integration to accelerate the hydrogen economy in the UK and beyond.”
