Basque Energy Agency: Hydrogen will account for 5% of the Basque industry’s energy consumption in 2030.
Iñigo Ansola, Director General of the Basque Energy Agency (EEA), has presented the main lines of work established in the Basque Hydrogen Strategy in the Basque Parliament. By 2030 , 5% of the Basque industry’s energy consumption has been proposed, and for that year, 500 transport vehicles are expected to use hydrogen as fuel.
Through this strategy, they want to take advantage of the energy opportunities offered by hydrogen, as well as in the environmental, industrial and technological fields.
In his speech, Ansola emphasized that hydrogen will be essential for “the definitive development of renewable energies and their integration into the energy system”, which is essential for reaching the decarbonisation quotas assumed by the Basque Country , in line with European objectives and the Paris Agreement.
As part of the 2030 strategy, other goals are to achieve an electrolysis power of 300 MW, with all hydrogen (100%) produced from renewable energy and low carbon, and with an annual production of 2,000 tonnes of synthetic fuels.

Another goal for the same year would be for 90% of the hydrogen consumed by the industry as a raw material to be of renewable or low-carbon origin , which would be 5% of the energy consumption of the industrial sector. To this end, they plan to promote a number of pilot projects that will use this fuel , such as hydrogen service stations for general public use.
The ultimate goal, in Ansola’s words, is to achieve zero consumption of oil and its derivatives by 2050 for energy uses. The Hydrogen Strategy aims to promote the ecosystem of hydrogen production, distribution and consumption in the Basque Country, using its existing industrial, logistics and technological capabilities.
Thus, the EVE intends to create a local market based on hydrogen as a viable tool for the decarbonisation of industry and other sectors .
They also want to export this knowledge to the international market , in line with the development of Basque technology in other sectors (wind energy, for example). The sector is expected to grow significantly across Europe in the coming years.
