Bolt launches first hydrogen powered ride hailing fleet in Tallinn
Bolt has launched its first hydrogen-powered ride-hailing fleet in the Estonian capital of Tallinn.
The global shared mobility giant is rolling out 30 hydrogen vehicles across the city as part of a Baltic green hydrogen value chain project. This refers to the creation of a complete system for producing, storing, transporting and using green hydrogen.
Oscar Rõõm, Head of Ride-Hailing at Bolt, said that hydrogen cars combine zero-emission driving with “fast refueling and long range”, enabling Bolt drivers to provide quick service in sustainable vehicles.
Bolt launches the fleet alongside renewable energy producer Utilitas, energy company Alexela, and local fleet partner Speed Rent OÜ. The green hydrogen value chain project, which unites these players, includes the establishment of green hydrogen production and a refuelling station Utilitas’ Väo energy complex in Tallinn. It also includes the purchase of 30 Toyota Mirai hydrogen cars from ELKE Auto, and a second green hydrogen refueling station to be completed at Alexela’s Peterburi Road site later this year.
Aivo Lokk, Utilitas’ Head of Business Analysis, said that the production and broader adoption of green hydrogen are of “strategic importance” to the European Union, given its ability to replace fossil fuels not only in transport but across various industrial sectors.
Aivo, said:
Volumes are still small and this is a pilot project, but the potential is significant,
In accordance with the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation, Estonia and other EU Member States are obliged to develop a network of hydrogen refueling stations by 2030. These should be located at urban transport hubs and no further apart than 200 kilometers along main highways.
Bolt riders can order hydrogen cars through the app under the Bolt, Comfort, Premium, Electric, and Comfort Electric ride-types.
Oscar, said:
We are pleased to offer our customers an even wider selection of emission-free ride options,
