BP lifts hydrogen project pipeline to 2.8mn t/yr.
BP has a hydrogen project pipeline with cumulative capacity of 2.8mn t/yr, up by 60pc from where it was at the end of 2022, chief executive Bernard Looney said.
This puts the company “well on the way” to reaching its target of doubling its pipeline by the end of this year, Looney said. He said in February that BP was looking to double the pipeline from 1.8mn t/yr, suggesting a target of 3.6mn t/yr.
Looney did not provide a breakdown of projects by production pathway, but said the pipeline growth is “underpinned” by new projects in Oman and the US. BP was awarded a plot for developing a renewable hydrogen production facility in Oman in June, and the firm’s vice president of hydrogen Tomeka McLeod said in March it is planning renewable and low-carbon hydrogen projects at refineries in the US states of Washington and Indiana.
A new project in Spain may have bolstered the pipeline this year. BP announced plans for a renewable hydrogen cluster with 2GW electrolysis capacity in Valencia in February.
The majority of BP’s planned projects may come on line in the next decade, with the company having set a target of 500,000-700,000 t/yr of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen by 2030. BP sees decarbonising hydrogen used at its own refineries as a first step towards ramping up renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. Its refineries consume around 500,000 t/yr of hydrogen, largely produced from natural gas with unabated emissions.
