Brazil to define set of hydrogen regulations within 60 days. The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE), in a meeting held this Tuesday (4/20), proposed the development of guidelines for the National Hydrogen Program.
MME Secretary of Energy Planning and Development, Paulo Cesar Magalhães:
In view of the difficulties encountered by several countries in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, hydrogen has gained strength as a resource aimed at the decarbonization of economies.
“The input carries a high energy density, has versatility in use, does not emit CO2 and can function as energy storage”
Brazil to define set of hydrogen regulations within 60 days
For the consolidation of the hydrogen economy, it is assumed the development of an infrastructure for the production, storage, transport and distribution of hydrogen, on the supply side, as well as the insertion of the energy source in the consumption matrix in key sectors, such as transport, steel and fertilizers.
To meet this challenge, new safety standards, new regulatory designs and a whole framework are needed to allow hydrogen to reach levels of competitiveness that will pave the way for large-scale use.
In the technological aspect, there are countless challenges to be overcome, although their production and use is already a reality in some niches. Hydrogen storage is one of them, as it requires high pressures for storage in the gaseous state, or cryogenics for storage in the liquid state.
Therefore, this CNPE Resolution opens the way for proposing guidelines for the National Hydrogen Program, to be published in 60 days, in cooperation with the Ministries of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Regional Development (MDR), with support from Energy Research Company (EPE).
Economy Minister Paulo Guedes highlighted the Brazilian capacity in the renewable energy sector and emphasized that “we have a great potential for hydrogen production”. Brazil has a clean and renewable electric energy matrix, with 83% of the energy consumed throughout the country coming from renewable sources.
The meeting was attended by ministers Luiz Eduardo Ramos of the Civil House, Paulo Guedes of the Economy, Ricardo Salles of the Environment, Augusto Heleno of the Office of Institutional Security of the Presidency of the Republic, in addition to the minister Bento Albuquerque, president of CNPE, and the representative of the state mines and energy secretariats, Adão Linhares Muniz. Representatives of the National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP), the Energy Research Company (EPE), Pré-Sal Petróleo SA (PPSA) and the other ministries that make up the CNPE also participated.
