Burckhardt Compression has been selected as compressor supplier for a new-built hydrogen liquefaction plant in South Korea. The order includes two BCS API618 compressors for the compression of hydrogen within the liquefaction process.
A fast-growing solution for decarbonizing mobility and industrial applications is to use hydrogen as energy carrier. To solve the challenges of hydrogen handling, transportation and storage, liquefied hydrogen is an attractive alternative.
Burckhardt Compression expects the transition from fossil fuel to hydrogen to drive strong market growth for hydrogen compression during the coming decades.
The new liquefaction plant in South Korea is part of the country’s strategy to remain a global leader in the development of hydrogen as clean energy. It will be able to produce 5 tons of liquefied hydrogen per day to supply the hydrogen charging stations in South Korea. The liquefaction plant is planned to start production in 2023.
Burckhardt Compression is supplying the hydrogen liquefaction plant with two fully skidded compressor packages with 136 kW and 1800 kW power output. Both packages include electrical motor and auxiliary components.
The compressor system will be used to increase the pressure of the supplied hydrogen from atmospheric pressure to 60 bar. As hydrogen compression for mobility and liquefaction applications must be totally oil-free, non-lubricated piston and packing sealing systems are used.
Burckhardt Compression offers a comprehensive hydrogen compressor portfolio for a variety of hydrogen applications. The company’s leading piston compressor technology stands for highest hydrogen purity and longest mean time between overhauls. In addition, Burckhardt Compression’s aftermarket service capabilities are supported by an extensive network of service hubs around the world.
