Carburos Metálicos joins the H2PORTS Hydrogen Project Consortium.
Air Products will provide the renewable hydrogen needed for the project.
Carburos Metálicos, a leading company in the industrial and medical gas sector in Spain that forms part of the Air Products Group, has recently joined the ‘H2PORTS’ project consortium, an initiative coordinated by the Valenciaport Foundation in close collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia and financed by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
Within the framework of this project, the Port of Valencia will test a reach stacker crane and a 4×4 tractor for a ro-ro terminal, both powered by hydrogen, under real-use conditions. The vehicles will be refueled by means of a portable hydrogen generator.
Metallic Carbides, as an expert in the entire hydrogen value chain -from production and distribution to supply to vehicles-, will provide the necessary knowledge and experience to supply hydrogen to the port and maritime sector, a sector that has a huge growth potential in the coming years.
Specifically, within the H2PORTS project, Carburos Metálicos will lead the installation of the hydrogen generator in the Port of Valencia and will manage it during a pilot period of two years, thus guaranteeing the good practices of the team involved and the correct handling of cargo operations. hydrogen.
Likewise, Carburos Metálicos will supply the renewable hydrogen and will develop the necessary logistics for the supply of the port machinery. Finally, it will provide support in security training and the exchange of good practices with consortium partners and other interested parties in order to guarantee the safety of operations.
Miquel Lope, general director of Carburos Metálicos, said:
We are proud to be members of this Consortium.
“At Air Products, we have a collaborative approach to develop and promote the hydrogen economy. This action is added to other mobility initiatives that we are leading, such as the ‘Hydrogen Route’ with demonstrations of supply and refueling of hydrogen cell buses in several cities in Spain”
“We are also participating in the first permanent bus line in Spain powered by renewable hydrogen with the supply of this fuel and the installation of a hydrogen generator, and in 2023 we will open the first public hydrogen generator in Tarragona, next to the Mediterranean corridor and the port area of the city,” he added.

About H2PORTS
The European Project “H2PORTS – Implementing Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies in Ports” coordinated by the Valenciaport Foundation, in close collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia, and financed by the Clean Hydrogen JU program, the successor of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), has as its main objective to test and validate hydrogen technologies on port machinery that allow us to have applicable and real solutions without affecting the performance and safety of port operations and producing zero local emissions.
The H2Ports Project will entail a total investment of 4 million euros and the participation of, in addition to the Valenciaport Foundation and the Port Authority of Valencia, the National Hydrogen Center, and the private companies MSC Terminal Valencia, Grimaldi Group, Hyster-Yale, Atena Distretto High Technology Environment Energy, Ballard Power Systems Europe, Enagás and Metallic Carbides.
Thanks to this initiative, the Port of Valencia will be the first port in Europe to incorporate hydrogen technologies to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
About Clean Hydrogen Partnership
The Clean Hydrogen Partnership programme, successor to the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), aims to strengthen and integrate the European Union’s research and innovation capacity to accelerate the development and improvement of advanced applications of clean hydrogen that are ready for the market, in the fields of energy, transport, construction and industrial end-uses, while strengthening the competitiveness of the Union’s clean hydrogen value chain.
The three members of the association are the European Commission, the hydrogen and fuel cell industries represented by Hydrogen Europe and the research community represented by Hydrogen Europe Research.
