Carburos Metalicos provides renewable hydrogen in Zaragoza, Spain.
Metal Carbides, a leading company in the industrial and medicinal gases sector in Spain that is part of the Air Products Group, has successfully concluded its participation in the circulation and refueling test carried out by the City Council from Zaragoza by a hydrogen bus (H2) that has covered the line that connects the city with its airport.
The company has provided a portable hydrogenerator, temporarily located at the Agreda Bus facilities in Zaragoza, as well as the supply of renewable H2 for the refueling of the H2 stack bus owned by Ágreda Bus, a company owned by Grupo Alsa and Ágreda Automóvil. that has traveled the distance of approximately 10 kilometers that separate the center of the Aragonese capital from its airport terminal.
In total, this zero-emission vehicle has traveled 1,601 kilometers of urban and peri-urban routes, and has transported 972 passengers during the 10 days that this test lasted.
The renewable H2 supplied by Metallic Carbides for this demonstration comes from a production plant associated with a Guarantees of Origin (GdO) program that allows certifying the renewable origin of the electricity used to obtain said H2.
Metallic Carbides has made clear the maturity of this technology and its ability to already contribute to decarbonizing urban transport, both for people and goods, within the framework of the environmental and energy transition objectives faced by large Spanish cities. Another aspect that has been revealed during this test is that hydrogen refueling is just as simple and fast as any other fuel.
Hydrogen route
The company is committed to extending the use of hydrogen for mobility as one of its strategic lines and has decided to carry out demonstrations of real use, which is why it has launched a hydrogen route this year that runs through several Spanish cities.
The first stops on this itinerary have been in Oviedo, Bilbao, Tarragona, Valladolid and Zaragoza. In addition to this initiative, Carburos Metalicos also supplies renewable H2 to the first hydrogeneration plant that came into operation this year in Madrid.
The Air Products Group has the world’s largest piped hydrogen distribution network, as well as a wide portfolio of technological patents related to its refueling, developed over more than 15 years, so it is present throughout the value chain of hydrogen, from production to final delivery to the vehicle.
Air Products’ refueling technologies provide more than 1.5 million hydrogen refills per year worldwide.
