Carburos Metalicos to supply with renewable hydrogen to the new Hyundai Nexo.

Carburos Metálicos, a leading company in the industrial and medical gases sector in Spain that is part of the Air Products group, supplies the renewable hydrogen (H2) that the Hyundai Nexo is using in various demonstrations. Refueling is carried out in the hydrogenerator that the company installed at the beginning of last year at the Alsa maintenance center in Torrejón de Ardoz and which serves the first regular H2 urban bus line that operates in the Community of Madrid.

The installation, which has technology from Carburos Metálicos (Air Products Group), is designed for vehicles dedicated to the collective transport of people, but it can be configured to recharge zero-emission cars such as the new Hyundai model, equipped with a fuel cell that uses H2 to generate the electricity that drives its electric motor.

This experience has served to demonstrate once again the speed with which the H2 refueling operation is carried out (no more than five minutes) and the ease for the user, since it is enough to place the hose in the filling mouth and activate the safety valve so that the process starts automatically.

Powering mobility with hydrogen
Carburos Metálicos is currently leading the development of the new mobility with H2 in Spain -one of its strategic lines-, since it has the necessary capacities to produce it, distribute it and take it to the vehicle depot through its own hydrogen generators. More than two years ago it began its ‘Hydrogen Route’, a series of refueling and supply tests with public buses that show that this technology is already a reality.

These tests are carried out in collaboration with various public administrations, transport operators and bus manufacturers. The company has also announced the forthcoming construction of what will be the first public hydrogen plant in Tarragona.

Carburos Metálicos is also a member of different associations that promote the H2 economy and actively participates in the ‘hydrogen tables’ of various autonomous communities created to promote projects within the framework of the ‘Hydrogen Roadmap’ established by the Government central. Similarly, he is a patron of the Chair of Hydrogen Studies created by the Comillas Pontifical University to study the role of this energy vector in the transition to a decarbonized economy.

The company is part of the world’s largest producer of H2, the Air Products Group, which has participated in more than 250 H2 service station projects in twenty countries since 1993. It also has the world’s largest channeled distribution network for this gas and a wide portfolio of patents related to its refueling, so it is present throughout its value chain. Today, Air Products refueling technologies provide more than 1.5 million H2 refills per year.

Miquel Lope, General Director of Carburos Metálicos, said:

We are delighted to collaborate with Hyundai for the refueling of its new hydrogen vehicle that Alsa has also made possible.

“Working hand in hand with the public and private sectors, as in this case, is part of the collaborative approach of Carburos Metálicos to promote mobility based on hydrogen, so we hope to continue helping operators and manufacturers committed to the energy transition and the sustainability to bring more solutions and services of this type to the market.”
