  • The agreement establishes the first hydrogen-powered logistics center in Spain

Carreras Grupo Logístico has signed an agreement with Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a global leader in comprehensive hydrogen solutions for the green hydrogen economy , to launch a complete green hydrogen ecosystem.

The alliance aims to establish, through a pilot project, the first hydrogen-powered logistics center in Spain , at the Carreras Grupo Logístico logistics center in Masquefa, Barcelona.

Plug will replace existing forklifts, which are powered by lead-acid batteries, with hydrogen fuel cells to support decarbonisation and efficiency improvements in Carreras Grupo Logístico’s operations . The transition to green hydrogen will improve energy efficiency, productivity and sustainability, while reducing operating costs.

The pilot project in Masquefa, launched in mid-August, will serve as a test site to evaluate the improvements using Plug technology compared to batteries. The learnings gained from this pilot project will be used to scale up hydrogen fuel cell technology at other sites in Spain and integrate it across Carreras’ entire logistics network, which includes 46 warehouses.

If the pilot project is successful, Plug will manage a complete green hydrogen ecosystem for Carreras Grupo Logístico, which will include up to 87 hydrogen fuel cells, a 1 MW (megawatt) electrolyser and a hydrogen recharging station.

Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug, said :

With our partner, Carreras Grupo Logístico, we are marking a historic moment: the first hydrogen-powered logistics centre in Spain,

“This strategic partnership highlights the transformative potential of hydrogen-powered solutions to achieve the twin goals of decarbonisation and operational improvements in the logistics sector.”

The benefits of hydrogen fuel cells over lead-acid batteries are considerable: fuel cells can be recharged in minutes, compared to several hours for batteries. The technology increases productivity by minimizing equipment downtime and requires less maintenance, which significantly reduces operating costs. In addition, hydrogen fuel cell technology contributes to reducing the carbon footprint , a priority for Carreras Logistics Group .

The global hydrogen fuel cell forklift market is growing strongly in North America, Europe and Asia.

The full implementation of the green hydrogen ecosystem, which will be executed in three phases, is expected to be completed by the first half of 2026.
