Ceará will receive the first green hydrogen plant in Brazil, operating as early as 2022, EDP do Brasil.

In a live broadcast through social networks, Governor Camilo Santana announced, alongside the board of EDP do Brasil, the installation of the pilot project for the implementation of a green hydrogen plant in Pecém, with a production capacity of 250 Nm3/h of gas. Its operation is expected to start as early as December 2022, attracting a total of R$ 41.9 million in investment.

Camilo celebrated that Ceará is becoming the home of green hydrogen.

Camilo Santana, Governor:

It is with joy that we received the news that the multinational EDP of Brazil will make an investment of almost R$ 42 million in green hydrogen in Brazil, announcing that Ceará will have the first green hydrogen plant in the country.

We have bet a lot on this clean energy, and EDP already generates more than 350 direct jobs in Ceará in the Port of Pecém with its thermoelectric, which produces almost half of the state’s energy consumption”, he said.

At the event were João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP in Brazil, Luís Otávio, its vice president, Nuno Costa, its communications director, Lourival Teixeira, director of the company in Brazil, the Secretary of Economic development and Labor (Sedet), Maia Júnior, the executive secretary of Sedet, Rosiane Oliveira, and the president of the Industrial and Port Complex of Pecém (CIPP S/A), Danilo Serpa.

The new plant

Installed in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP), the plant will be the first of the group, with a capacity of 3 MW and a state-of-the-art electrolysing module for fuel production with guarantee of renewable origin. The modular unit will have the capacity to produce 250 Nm3/h of gas. The H2 plant project was presented by EDP’s CEO in Brazil, João Marques da Cruz.

Considering that Ceará brings together strategic characteristics to lead the process of introducing green hydrogen in the country, either because of its exceptional solar and wind potential – fundamental for gas production – or for its location and the offer of excellent infrastructure for the disposal of this product to the international market, we elect the state to house our first green hydrogen plant in Brazil.

“This project will position Ceará in a pioneering way in generating knowledge on the subject and at the center of a vast production chain and application of this fuel”.

Research & Development Project

EDP’s Green Hydrogen (Pecém H2V) plant is a Research & Development project of UTE Pecém, installed in São Gonçalo do Amarante (CE), which should generate clean fuel with guarantee of renewable origin, in addition to developing a roadmap with analysis of scalability scenarios, considering all downstream links and amount of hydrogen production.

Throughout the project, the gas production chain will be analyzed; business models; strategic partnerships with industries, service companies and automotive companies; fuel generation and storage; and adaptations in mobility using hydrogen gas in road, rail, air and sea transport.
