Cespira, a new home for HPDI: A New Era for Sustainable Transportation

HPDI Technology AB, the joint venture between Volvo Group and Westport Fuel Systems (“Westport”), is thrilled to announce its launch as Cespira. This marks a major milestone in the company’s journey and underscores its commitment to leading the charge in sustainable transportation solutions, striving for a brighter future for generations to come.

“The name Cespira—combining ‘espira,’ meaning ‘breathe out,’ with ‘C’ for ‘clean’—perfectly embodies our mission and vision,” says Dan Sceli, CEO of Cespira. “The turquoise symbol above the ‘i’ in Cespira’s logo is more than just a design choice; it represents our collaboration with Volvo Group and Westport, the integration of established technologies with cutting-edge clean fuel solutions, and the molecular structure of hydrogen, which is central to our mission.

Moreover, the symbol reflects our ambition to partner with multiple OEMs, expanding the reach and impact of the joint venture. Our goal is to be a trusted collaborator and partner for all stakeholders in the industry. Collaboration is at the core of everything we do, and it’s through these partnerships that we will lead the way toward true decarbonization.”

Cespira’s strategy focuses on expanding access to high pressure direct injection, or HPDITM fuel system technology by overcoming barriers to its adoption. The system enables internal combustion engines to operate with carbon neutral or fossil free fuels such as bio, e-fuels, or green hydrogen, without compromising performance and efficiency. All without significant changes to the existing powertrain.

By making this technology available on a global scale, Cespira is removing geographic, operational, and technical barriers, paving the way for the widespread adoption of cleaner fuel solutions.

For example, one of the standout features of HPDI is its seamless integration into existing internal combustion engine architectures. This design choice not only facilitates easier and more cost-effective adoption but supports Cespira’s ambition to leverage existing resources in novel ways to advance global climate goals faster.

Already today, HPDI fuel system technology offers substantial CO2 reductions for long-haul trucking and demanding off-road uses. Now vehicles running on fossil fuels, such as diesel, can be replaced with carbon neutral or fossil free fuels such as bio, e-fuels, or green hydrogen without compromising performance.

says Lars Stenqvist, CTO Volvo Group

“The launch of Cespira manifests our joint venture with Westport Fuel Systems. The HPDI technology is important for decarbonization, offering immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while utilizing existing internal combustion engines.

This can be achieved today with biogas and natural gas, and we foresee exciting possibilities with hydrogen. With Cespira, we are well-positioned to continue leading the industry toward a more sustainable future and we look forward to seeing other OEMs explore this technology,”

Achieving top performance while meeting the world’s strictest emissions standards and maintaining a minimal carbon footprint requires more than just advanced technology—it demands seamless integration. That’s why Cespira’s focus is on delivering solutions that are intricately woven into high-performance vehicles through OEM factory channels. This approach ensures that our innovations not only meet but surpass industry standards, setting the stage for the future of sustainable transportation.
