Chile and France sign a joint declaration to create a bilateral working group for the development of green hydrogen.

As part of his visit to Chile, the Delegate Minister of Foreign Trade, Attractiveness and French Abroad, Olivier Becht, met with the Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, to engage in a bilateral political and technical exchange to address common challenges on the energy transition process and the participation of French companies in the green hydrogen industry.

At the end of this meeting, both ministers signed a joint declaration on the creation of a Bilateral Working Group on Low Carbon Hydrogen, an initiative that Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Gabriel Boric had proposed during a parallel meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, on September 20, 2022. This working group also gives operational continuity to the joint declaration on green hydrogen signed on June 30, 2021 by both nations.

Among the agreements reached, the possibility was raised that the French government will place an International Technical Expert at the disposal of the local Ministry of Energy, a specialist in low-carbon hydrogen and its use in transport. This will integrate the bilateral working group that will begin its functions during the second semester of 2023.

Olivier Becht, Minister said:

I thank the Chilean minister and government for their willingness to work closely with France on green hydrogen and decarbonization of our economies.

“This working group reinforces the technical and political cooperation between Chile and France, as well as our common ambitions in terms of environmental protection and the development of new decarbonized energies”.

For his part, Minister Pardow highlighted the signing of this joint declaration. “Green Hydrogen plays a fundamental role in Chile’s path towards the goal of carbon neutrality in 2050, as established by our Framework Law on Climate Change, and France is a strategic partner to achieve this objective.”

In this regard, the Secretary of State stated that “the Chilean government is developing an Action Plan that allows understanding the needs of companies and communities for the harmonious development of this new industry in our country.”

The French companies present in Chile in the energy sector (Engie, EDF, Total) are already committed to the decarbonization of their production and to ambitious projects to produce green hydrogen, as evidenced by the investment of 20 billion dollars by Total EREN in the Magallanes Region and the Air Liquide and Engie projects in the Antofagasta Region, which received support from Corfo.
