Chile Seeks to Create a Green Hydrogen Export Corridor to Europe

Chile seeks to create a green hydrogen export corridor to Europe.

Chile will host the H2 Mission, a meeting that will bring together the most important European players in the energy sector with the aim of discussing the infrastructure projects necessary to ensure the green hydrogen supply chain and plan the conditions required to establish an export-import corridor of clean energy between Chile and Europe.

With this event, ProChile, the government agency in charge of the international promotion of the country, marks the beginning of a new stage in its plans to make Chile the most competitive exporter of renewable energy in the world by the year 2030.

For five days, representatives of European companies such as Engie, Total, Enel, Siemens, RWE, Austria Energy, Linde or Statkraft , together with the main players in the Chilean ecosystem, will meet with a delegation led by the Port of Rotterdam and will visit important pilot projects in the north and south of Chile.

The H2 Mission, organized by the Chilean Ministry of Energy and the Port of Rotterdam, with the support of the Embassies of both countries and ProChile, will thus allow the generation of synergies and project solutions related to the green hydrogen supply chain between Chile and Europe , including issues related to certification, regulatory, commercial, technological, human capital and infrastructure development.

The Netherlands and Chile have been working together to create a corridor that allows renewable hydrogen produced in Chile to be exported and distributed efficiently in the different European countries from the Port of Rotterdam . With this event, both countries seek to associate all their European and Chilean allies around a common goal.

With the most powerful solar radiation on the planet and on-shore winds that compete with the off-shore potential of other geographical areas, Chile has the natural conditions to produce more than 1,800 GW of renewable energy , that is, 75 times the country’s needs. for internal consumption.

To accompany this export potential, the country launched its National Green Hydrogen Strategy in 2020, a roadmap with which it has proposed, by 2030, to be the global leader in the production of H2 by electrolysis and to produce the cheapest green hydrogen in the world with a price below 1.5 USD / kgH2.

For its part, the Port of Rotterdam, considered the largest industrial complex in Europe and through which around 13% of the total energy used in Europe enters, is one of the promoters of the Dutch National Hydrogen Strategy whose mission is to maintain the logistics leadership of the country and position it as the main European platform for the import of fuels with low carbon emissions.

4th Green Hydrogen Summit – Chile 2022

As a complement to Misión H2, the fourth version of the Green Hydrogen Summit organized by Corfo, the Chilean government’s economic development agency, will take place from January 17 to 23.

The event, which will be held in virtual mode, expects to gather more than 5,000 people from various parts of the world, mainly related to the development of green hydrogen production projects in Latin America.

On January 19, the two central activities will take place, a plenary session and a forum, along with a business roundtable. The other days there will be a virtual technology fair and a meeting for students and young professionals in the sector.
