Chungcheongnam-do has set out to build the nation’s largest eco-friendly hydrogen industry cluster
Chungcheongnam-do has set out to build the nation’s largest eco-friendly hydrogen industry cluster in the west coast area. It aims to create an industrial ecosystem from hydrogen production to storage and utilization by investing 11 trillion won over the next five years. Attention is focusing on whether Chungnam, where thermal power generation and steel industry were concentrated, can be transformed into an “eco-friendly” base.
On the 18th, Chungcheongnam-do held the 7th Hydrogen Energy International Forum to build the largest hydrogen industry cluster in Korea and signed business agreements with 19 institutions, organizations, universities, and companies.
Kim Tae-heum, governor of Chungcheongnam-do, said:
The west coast of Chungcheongnam-do is stigmatized as the nation’s No. 1 carbon emission due to the concentration of high-carbon industries such as coal-fired power, steelmaking, and petrochemicals,
“In order to cope with carbon neutrality, which is a task of the times, and to cope with the surge in electricity demand due to the artificial intelligence (AI) era, we will actively create a hydrogen industry belt on the west coast as the most urgent task.”
As a strategy to promote the hydrogen industry belt on the west coast, Chungcheongnam-do established △Expand clean hydrogen production to respond to demand △Creating an ecosystem to foster the hydrogen industry △Building an eco-friendly hydrogen city △Cultivating hydrogen specialized companies and manpower.
△ Production of 1.2 million tons of hydrogen △ Construction of 10 places in hydrogen mixing and power generation 20 GW △ Development of 200 hydrogen companies △ Supply of 50,000 hydrogen cars △ Installation of 340 hydrogen charging stations in 180 places is aimed at achieving by 2040. To this end, Chungcheongnam-do will invest 10.917.3 trillion won in 23 projects for five years by 2030.
Chungcheongnam-do will focus on national public offering projects such as Dangjin, Seosan, Boryeong, and Taean Energy Industrial Convergence Complex, and hydrogen-specialized complexes centered on Dangjin ammonia docks, hydrogen production facilities, and hydrogen power generation.
In addition, hydrogen production facilities will be expanded by year, and Taean will be the fourth hydrogen city in Chungcheongnam-do after Boryeong, Dangjin, and Seosan. A total of 149 billion won will be invested in the four hydrogen cities to expand hydrogen production facilities and lay the foundation for the entire cycle from hydrogen production to utilization. Instead of coal-fired power plants that will be extinguished sequentially, it supports mixed power generation for public companies so that hydrogen and ammonia power generation can proceed.
South Chungcheong Province will also focus its administrative power on building hydrogen infrastructure to create future food, including △ establishment of a gas turbine test research center △ promotion of a free special zone for regulation of ammonia hydrogen fuel cell power generation △ establishment of a lab specializing in the development of liquid hydrogen technology △ promotion of preliminary feasibility studies for carbon dioxide capture and utilization (CCU) mega projects. In addition, in order to establish an industry-academic cooperation ecosystem, △international cooperation and hydrogen specialized networks will be strengthened △ fostering human resources in the Chungnam-type hydrogen energy sector △ operation of industry-academic-related consultative bodies will be promoted.
Local governments such as Boryeong City, Seosan City, Dangjin City and Taean County, Chungnam Techno Park and Korea Institute of Production Technology, Korea Hydrogen Association, Dankook University, Hoseo University, Jungbu, West and East-West Power, Linde Korea, Lotte Chemical, Hanwha Impact, Hanwha Total Energy, Hyundai Oilbank, SK Innovation, and Future Enseo Energy participated in the agreement.
According to the agreement, Chungnam-do, Boryeong-si, Seosan-si, Dangjin-si, and Taean-gun provide policy, administrative, and technical support, while Chungnam Techno Park, the Korea Hydrogen Association, and the Korea Institute of Production Technology cooperate and support hydrogen infrastructure. The university will support manpower training and R&D promotion cooperation, the three power generation companies will cooperate in converting coal-fired power to low-carbon power generation facilities such as hydrogen and ammonia, and the company will cooperate to create an ecosystem of the hydrogen industry in the province.
Meanwhile, more than 500 people attended the hydrogen energy international forum held at the Benicia Hotel in Seosan on the same day, including Governor Kim, Australian Ambassador to South Korea Jeff Robinson, Indian Ambassador to South Korea Nish Kant Singh, and Danish Energy Minister Yesper Knussen.
