CIP signs MoUs to advance ammonia-fuelled carriers

According to CIP, these collaborations focus on the safe, efficient, and scalable delivery of clean ammonia for both deep-sea and local distribution, as CIP seeks to establish end-to-end logistics for this emerging fuel source. One significant MOU is with Færder Tankers, targeting the development of a 50,000 cbm medium gas carrier (MGC) designed with advanced manoeuvrability and ship-to-ship bunkering capabilities. This vessel is expected to set a new benchmark for medium gas carriers and will support ETF’s clean ammonia projects, with delivery anticipated in the second half of 2028.

Another partnership is with BW Epic Kosan to develop handy-sized ammonia carriers ranging from 9,000 cbm to 35,000 cbm. These vessels will feature dual-fuel ammonia engines and bunkering capabilities. The company will time charter several of these vessels to ETF or its subsidiaries.

Additionally, CIP is in advanced discussions with other major shipping operators to develop Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs), designed for large-scale deep-sea ammonia transportation. These VLACs aim to meet the growing demand for cost-effective and energy-efficient delivery of clean ammonia to global offtakers. The brokerage firm Ifchor Galbraiths has been selected to support these developments.
