Colombia and Germany sign an agreement to promote the green hydrogen industry.

The Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, Irene Vélez, and the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Germán Umaña, have signed a memorandum with the German company Fraunhofer to analyze the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives in Colombia and its possible export towards Germany.

The signing of this agreement, which took place within the framework of the visit of the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to Germany, will make it possible to study the possibility that the Caribbean region of Colombia becomes an important industrial area for hydrogen and can deliver significant volumes to local and international markets at competitive prices.

The Fraunhofer Society is one of the leading applied research centers in Europe and has offices in the United States, Brazil, South Africa, Israel, China and India. His studies, known last December, are the origin of this agreement.

The memorandum highlights that Colombia has been setting the course for an “ambitious” development of hydrogen as an energy resource and of the strategic industrial area of Cartagena as a potential future large-scale production center, thanks to its excellent wind and solar resources.

The Minister of Energy has thanked this collaboration and has been “sure” that it is the beginning of a new path to achieve a more sustainable planet. “Green hydrogen is an opportunity to close social and economic gaps,” she has stated.
