Colombia – UDES hydrogen stove passes COP16 test

In the Green Zone of COP16, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho, highlighted this hydrogen stove, a development led by the University of Santander (UDES).

Camacho underlined UDES’ commitment to address global environmental challenges:

UDES is working intensively on green hydrogen projects applied in the industrial, agro-industrial, domestic and vehicle sectors. We believe that this is a unique technology in the world.

During the presentation in Cali, the stove was tested by a team of experts composed of Juan Camilo Zapata, hydrogen advisor of the Ministry of Mines and Energy; Álvaro Ramírez and Alfredo Benavides, from the H2 Research Center of UDES; Rosario González, deputy director of Energy of the Department of National Planning; and Minister Camacho himself.

César Raúl Torres Sierra, director of the Hydrogen Research Center at UDES, the institution leading this project, explained that “this technology could revolutionize not only the way we cook, but also the way we think about the use of resources in our homes.” According to Torres Sierra, the device atomically decomposes water to generate hydrogen, thus producing the fire necessary for cooking.

In addition, the UDES team presented a vehicle that uses hydrogen as a fuel complement

Torres Sierra, said :

This vehicle allows savings of up to 50% in gasoline,

The researcher added that the vehicle maintains its efficiency at various altitudes,

functioning equally at sea level or at 4,000 meters, without affecting the engine’s performance.

COP16, which began on October 21 and will end next Sunday, has turned Cali into the world epicenter of conservation and sustainable development. Under the motto “Peace with Nature,” the event brings together more than 14,500 participants, including 10 heads of state and 103 environment ministers. In this framework, UDES seeks to demonstrate that solutions to environmental problems can be born in Colombia’s classrooms and laboratories.

The presence of UDES at COP16 is not an isolated event. The university has made progress in international collaborations.

Fernando Vargas Mendoza, president of UDES, said :

We were recently in Lima, Peru, speaking with ministers and the Chamber of Deputies, with the aim of facilitating the adoption of our technology in the Andean country,

Vargas also recalled the intervention of UDES in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, where the institution has implemented green hydrogen projects with encouraging results.

He added,

The Galapagos National Park is waiting to install these systems in its ships and vehicles, and local NGOs are also interested,

The projects of the Hydrogen Research Center of the UDES are not limited to transportation and domestic use. According to Vargas Mendoza, in the industrial field, systems are being designed for thermoelectric plants with the aim of improving their efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and minimizing pollution. In the agro-industrial sector, the university is working on the production of ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen, essential elements for obtaining urea, which could satisfy national demand and open opportunities in the American and global markets.

During COP16, Vargas Mendoza called for collective action:

It is essential that the population becomes aware of the carbon footprint we generate. We must recycle and avoid polluting activities. If we do not take action and become aware of our impact, current efforts could be in vain. My message is to reduce our carbon footprint.
