Connecticut hydrogen fuel cell company cuts 57 job at locations in East Hartford, South Windsor.
An East Hartford-based fuel cell company, HyAxiom, laid off 57 of its employees.
An official with HyAxiom confirmed the layoffs of both hourly and salaried workers in a written statement to Hearst Connecticut Media. The company had a workforce of 300 people before the layoffs occurred.
The statement said in part:
The percentage of employees impacted represents 19 percent of HyAxiom’s total U.S. workforce.
“This reduction in our workforce was driven by the adverse global economic situation coupled with impacts to the industry. The South Windsor manufacturing facility is not closing.”
HyAxiom’s manufacturing facility in South Windsor is located at 195 Governors Highway. The company, which has its headquarters on East River Drive in East Hartford, is a U.S. affiliate of the South Korean conglomerate Doosan.
Jeff Hyungrak Chung, HyAxiom’s chief executive officer, said the workforce reduction:
was driven by the adverse global economic situation coupled with impacts to the industry.
“We value the contributions of all HyAxiom employees and deeply regret the need for this action,” Chung said.
The South Windsor manufacturing facility traces its roots back to the early 2000s when it was a division of United Technologies Corp. known as UTC Power. That company was acquired by Oregon-based CleanEdge Power in February 2013.
Doosan acquired CleanEdge Power’s fuel cell business out of bankruptcy in July 2014. Doosan’s fuel cell business took the HyAxiom name in 2022.
