COP – Global hydrogen trade initiatives launched – Argus.
A host of hydrogen initiatives were launched today at the UN Cop 28 climate summit, indicating progress in increasing interoperability and reducing fragmentation in the sector.
Heads of state and governments, as well as Hydrogen Council executives representing global industrial firms involved in the sector, convened to launch initiatives aimed at easing cross-border trade. These
are a public-private action statement on cross-border trading, an intergovernmental declaration of intent on mutual recognition of certification schemes for hydrogen and hydrogen derivates, and a methodology for the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in hydrogen production pathways as drawn up by the Geneva-based International Standards Organisation (ISO).
The public-private action statement comprises five focus areas — permitting, which identifies solutions for accelerating permit-granting processes and ensuring high quality permitting requests; deployment at scale, to develop enabling infrastructure and ensure supply chain readiness; international standards to develop international technical standards to facilitate global cross-border trade; mutual recognition of certification schemes; and sustainable development goal benefits to create socio-economic value locally and strengthen engagement with local communities.
The public-private action statement will unlock trade corridors between exporting and importing countries, said Hydrogen Council co-chairs Yoshinori Kanehana, chairman of the board at Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Sanjiv Lamba, chief executive of gas firm Linde.
The declaration of intent on mutual recognition of certification schemes for hydrogen and its derivatives has been signed by 39 countries.
The ISO methodology provides a global benchmark for the assessment of GHG emissions in hydrogen production pathways. It “[assesses] the GHG footprint of hydrogen from well to consumption gate, including every delivery gate on a life-cycle analysis basis,” said ISO president Ulrika Francke.
