Cummins – reflections from European hydrogen week, the importance of the hydrogen economy.
Hydrogen may have one of the simplest molecular structures, but it is a key element in solving some complex problems in the fight against climate change. Already in use in multiple sectors for transportation, power storage and industrial applications, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are leading us toward a net-zero future.
As we reflect on the outcomes and results of the second European Hydrogen Week, it is important to raise awareness of the vast potential hydrogen holds in creating a more sustainable world and driving forward advancements in the hydrogen economy.
The aim of the European Union (EU) Green Deal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% (compared to 1990 levels) by 2030, in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 – a goal Cummins shares through its PLANET 2050 strategy. To meet these ambitious targets, the European Commission has published a Hydrogen Strategy and the “Fit for 55” package of legislation.
Cummins supports the EU in its efforts to establish ambitious infrastructure targets for renewable hydrogen refueling, sub targets for the uptake of renewable hydrogen, and certification plans for renewable hydrogen. We also believe in the need to develop market design rules and access to pipelines for hydrogen.
Renewable, or “green” hydrogen will play a crucial role in decarbonising Europe. We encourage the European Commission to work with industry to scale up production, without creating barriers in the short term. To scale-up the hydrogen economy along the whole value chain requires cooperation and partnership between stakeholders, including industry, researchers, decision makers and civil society.
As the hydrogen economy continues to evolve, Cummins continues to invest in hydrogen and fuel cell technology and innovations. Currently a leader in hydrogen technologies, and in addition to facilities developing and producing fuel cells and electrolysers across Europe, Cummins is also advancing the potential of hydrogen internal combustion engines to reduce emissions in heavy-duty sectors.
Cummins is dedicated to playing its part on the path to decarbonisation in Europe, and worldwide. Discover more about Cummins’ hydrogen and fuel cell projects in Europe.
