Denmark – a new executive order came into force that makes it possible to issue guarantees of origin for hydrogen.

A new executive order came into force that makes it possible to issue guarantees of origin for hydrogen. This means that PtX actors can show that they trade in green hydrogen. Previously, it was only possible for electricity, gas and heat.

The path towards a green society must, among other things, be through indirect electrification via PtX (Power-to-X). The PtX technology makes it possible to produce fuels and chemicals that can replace fossil products in a number of hard-to-change sectors, such as shipping, aviation, agriculture, parts of industry and parts of heavy road transport.

Without the transformation of these sectors, Denmark is considered unable to achieve the long-term goal of climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest. The crucial thing is that the hydrogen used in the PtX processes is produced with renewable energy sources, which can now be guaranteed with guarantees of origin for hydrogen.

New executive order opens up new, green opportunities

From 1 July, it became possible for PtX actors to market and show that they trade in green hydrogen and use green hydrogen in their processes. In the past, it has only been possible to obtain guarantees of origin for electricity, gas and heat, which means that it is only in these areas that it has been possible for energy companies to show that they traded in green energy.

With the amendment to the order on guarantees of origin for electricity, gas, district heating and district cooling from renewable energy sources, the guarantee of origin system is extended to also include hydrogen.

It will thus be possible to issue guarantees of origin for hydrogen, which document that a given quantity of hydrogen has been produced with renewable energy sources. PtX players are thus given the opportunity to point out that they supply green hydrogen, while companies and consumers can generally say that they use green hydrogen.

The executive order entered into force on 1 July 2023.
