Deutsche Bahn orders 60 hydrogen buses from Caetano Bus.
Deutsche Bahn will have the first hydrogen vehicles running in a year in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.
German public transport body Deutsche Bahn has signed an agreement with Portuguese manufacturer to acquire 60 hydrogen buses by 2026.
The move is part of plans by DB Regio Bus, which moves 470 million passengers a year, to phase out the last diesel bus in 2038. The first fuel cell electric buses (FCEB) will start running in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein in early 2024.
Evelyn Palla, DB A,G said:
Hydrogen buses are climate-friendly on the road and have another advantage – they can be refuelled faster than battery-powered electric bus.
“With their long range, hydrogen buses are particularly well suited to replace diesel vehicles in rural areas. With the order of 60 hydrogen buses, we are taking another step towards saying goodbye to diesel.”
The €40-million deal includes buses supplied by Portuguese manufacturer Caetanobus and the fuel cells by Toyota.
The new “H2 CityGold” buses are twelve metres long and have 34 seats and 47 standing places. The vehicles can travel between 350 KM in winter and 550 KM in summer on one tank of hydrogen.
