Deutsche ReGas completes FEED for Lubmin hydrogen hub

German LNG terminal operator Deutsche ReGas has completed the front-end engineering and design phase for its planned hydrogen hub in Lubmin

This project, known as H2-Hub Lubmin, started in September 2023. Deutsche ReGas has signed an agreement in principle with Norwegian firm Höegh LNG to realise a floating hydrogen import terminal in Lubmin, creating a large-scale electrolysis plant which will use renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Höegh has developed green ammonia cracker technology embedded into a barge, which serves as an industrial pilot for converting and decarbonising FSRUs in Germany.

Deutsche ReGas will provide the onshore terminal infrastructure and co-ordinate the entire project, including permitting and marketing the import capacities at the terminal.

The two-phase project will first focus on constructing a 200-MW electrolyser plant by the end of 2026, intending to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Phase two will see the capacity gradually expanded to 500 MW by 2028, with an estimated production of up to 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, providing a reliable supply for customers in eastern and southwestern Germany.

Deutsche ReGas’s new FSRU-based LNG terminal at the industrial port of Mukran also commenced regular operations in late August 2024, when the LNG carrier Hellas Diana unloaded its cargo at the Deutsche Ostsee terminal, marking the first case of LNG delivery into the two interconnected FSRUs.

Deutsche Ostsee has a storage capacity of over 300,000 m3 of LNG and is the largest feed-in point of all German LNG terminals with a firm capacity of 16 GWh/h. About 15% of Germany’s total natural gas demand can be fed from the terminal into the OAL, NEL and EUGAL gas pipeline system, which enables gas transport from the German Baltic coast onwards within Germany, Austria and to the neighbouring Eastern European countries.
