Dr Sunita Satyapal Announces Departure from US Department of Energy After Nearly 22 Years of Service Advancing Hydrogen Innovation

Washington, D.C., April 24, 2025 — Dr. Sunita Satyapal, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), has announced her departure from federal service after nearly 22 years of dedicated leadership in advancing hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

Dr. Satyapal has been at the forefront of the United States’ hydrogen energy initiatives, serving as Director of HFTO for close to 16 years. Her tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the issuance of over 1,089 U.S. patents since 2004 due to HFTO funding, the development of 30 commercial technologies, and 65 additional technologies poised for commercialization in the near future. Under her guidance, the HFTO has played a pivotal role in formulating a national hydrogen strategy, launching thousands of projects such as the H2 hubs, and fostering international partnerships with over 30 countries.

Reflecting on her decision, Dr. Satyapal stated,

It has truly been an honor of a lifetime to be a part of and to lead the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office.

“I will be leaving DOE and U.S. federal service. It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made but I would like to support the incredible federal workers who are early/midway through their careers to have more of an opportunity to stay and continue the important work.”

Dr. Satyapal’s commitment to public service was evident when she transitioned from the private sector to the DOE over two decades ago, taking a significant pay cut and selling her stock options to join the government. Her passion for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies has been unwavering, often advocating for the field through initiatives like National Hydrogen Day, the 1.008-mile educational walk with the Smithsonian, and showcasing fuel cell vehicles at various events.

She will be on administrative leave from May 7 through December 31, 2025, as part of the deferred resignation/retirement program. While Dr. Satyapal has not yet announced her future endeavors, she remains open to opportunities and ideas from the community.

In her farewell message, Dr. Satyapal expressed her deep gratitude to colleagues, partners, and the broader hydrogen and fuel cell community, stating,

I will miss you dearly but know you will carry on the important work, and I will be thinking of you. May the force [of the most abundant element in the universe] be with you.

Dr. Satyapal’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the DOE’s efforts to advance clean energy technologies. Her leadership has laid a strong foundation for the continued growth and success of hydrogen and fuel cell initiatives in the United States and beyond.
