Dutch Cabinet will not combine construction of hydrogen pipeline with power cables

The Dutch government is scrapping plans to simultaneously install a hydrogen pipeline and DC cables. The so-called Delta Rhine Corridor project will become less complex and will focus solely on the hydrogen and CO₂ pipelines.

The original plan for the Delta Rhine Corridor project remains in place, namely the construction of a hydrogen pipeline from the port of Rotterdam, via the Brabant municipality of Moerdijk, to the German border at Venlo. In addition, a series of direct current cables would be laid in the pipeline corridor at the same time, but this plan resulted in ‘too much complexity and therefore unacceptable delays to the entire project’. The ministers involved in the project have announced that this part of the plan is therefore being scrapped, in their own words ‘to maintain perspective on timely sustainability of the industry’.

There were also plans to install pipes for the supply and/or discharge of ammonia. This will also no longer be implemented. The ministers have announced that despite the cancellation of this part of the plan, there will still be room for ammonia pipes in the pipeline strip in question. This part of the plan could therefore still be implemented in the future.

The plans for the Delta Rhine Corridor infrastructure project were presented in May 2023. The aim of the large pipeline connection is to make the industry more sustainable with the direct supply of hydrogen. This hydrogen comes from Germany from energy producer Uniper. Power cables would be incorporated into the pipelines at the same time. Tennet was involved in this part of the project. The company says it is disappointed with the government’s decision, according to the Volkskrant . The Delta Rhine Corridor was originally supposed to be completed in 2028, but that was postponed last summer to sometime between 2031 and 2033. German companies, Shell and Gasunie are also participating in the project.
