Ecopetrol , the largest oil company in Colombia, has signed the hydrogen company H2B2 , founded by Felipe Benjumea , former president of Abengoa, for its green transition.

The Colombian company has selected a group of foreign multinationals with which it has partnered to carry out this energy transition and meet its commitments to reduce Co2 emissions by 2050.

In addition to H2B2, Ecopetrol has partnered with France’s EDF , Germany’s Siemens , Britain’s Empati , and Japan’s Mitsui . The Colombian company has already begun work with the six companies to decarbonise hydrogen production in its refineries, in addition to other industrial uses, as recently reported to the US market regulator, the SEC.

Ecopetrol’s commitment to H2B2 coincides with the Spanish company’s plans to go public on the alternative market in the United States, the Nasdaq , an operation that it would carry out using the Spac formula, foreseeably before the end of the first quarter of the year

H2B2 announced at the end of last year the appointment of Antonio Vázquez , former president of the IAG airline group (Iberia, British Airways, Vueling and Air Lingus), as president of the company.

It has also appointed Anselmo Andrade Fernández de Mesa as CEO -he has been part of the H2B2 management team since its founding in 2016-, replacing the company’s founder, Felipe Benjumea, who has assumed the role of strategic advisor.

H2B2 has incurred losses of more than one million euros in the years 2020 and 2021, and has raised its turnover from one year to the next to 1.1 million from 0.3 million; total net worth and liabilities also rose from 2 million to 6.5 million between 2020 and 2021.

The Spanish company is already present in California, Germany, India and Colombia, having received grants from the Californian Energy Commission , as well as from the IPCEI Hy2Tech program, funded by the European Commission .

H2B2 is confident that the hydrogen energy market will be worth $10 billion by 2030 , with an increase in electrolyser installations in the coming years.
