Ecopetrol – Partnership with Germany’s GIZ to produce sustainable aviation fuels from green hydrogen
Bogota – Ecopetrol and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) signed an agreement to develop feasibility and engineering studies for a pilot plant for synthetic fuels (Power-to-Liquid) in Cartagena.
The initiative is aimed at promoting the use of green hydrogen in the production of e-SAF (electronic – Sustainable Aviation Fuel), an energy energy that is set to contribute to the decarbonisation of global aviation.
As part of the alliance, over the next 24 months, technical analyses will be carried out for the pilot plant, which could be leveraged on the infrastructure of the Coral Project that Ecopetrol is building at the Cartagena Refinery, with a production capacity of up to 800 tons of green hydrogen per year.
GIZ will provide specialized technical knowledge and international experience in Power-to-X technologies, consolidating itself as a strategic ally for the development of the project. It is a combination of assets, technical capabilities and international cooperation, which will accelerate technological validation and reduce risks in future scaling.
The project integrates Ecopetrol’s historical experience in the production of fuels and biofuels, now applied to the development of non-fossil synthetic liquid fuels, which reinforces its role as a key player in the construction of new energy value chains.
With this alliance, Ecopetrol strengthens its production capacities for low-emission hydrogen and synthetic fuels (e-fuels), consolidates its leadership in the energy transition and positions Colombia as a benchmark in the development of sustainable aviation fuels in Latin America, in line with its long-term strategy.
This cooperation is designed to generate expertise that can be transferred to other countries and sectors, helping fossil fuel-based industries move towards green transformation through the implementation of concrete pilot projects and shared learning.
