EcoSimplex Begins Commercial Operation of Biogas Hydrogen Station in Magok, Seoul

EcoSimplex, a company specializing in renewable energy and ESG, announced on June 2 that it has begun commercial operation of the ‘ECO-Hydrogen Station’ it built in Magok, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The company recently changed its name and is now fostering its hydrogen business as a core growth area.

This project was carried out as a private sector support initiative through the ‘2024 Biogas-Based Clean Hydrogen Production Facility Installation Project’ promoted by the Ministry of Climate. According to the company, this is the first case among the ministry’s public projects to begin commercial operation using the on-site method.

The ‘ECO-Hydrogen Station’ is a facility that utilizes approximately 4,000 Nm³ of biogas per day, generated from a sewage treatment plant, to produce about 500 kg of hydrogen daily. The hydrogen produced will be supplied to route buses, police buses, and hydrogen passenger cars. In line with this, the company has also expanded its charging infrastructure.

Methane (CH4), the main component of biogas, is a major greenhouse gas with a global warming potential (GWP) more than 21 times higher than that of carbon dioxide (CO2). EcoSimplex explained that producing hydrogen from such biogas can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 85% compared to grey hydrogen, which uses fossil fuels such as city gas.

Particularly in Europe, hydrogen produced from biogas is classified as green hydrogen, an eco-friendly energy source, which is considered significant for expanding the supply of clean hydrogen.

Kim Youngmin, Vice President of EcoSimplex, stated,

By supplying hydrogen fuel generated from biogas derived from citizens’ sewage, we can contribute to building a sustainable society by reducing greenhouse gases, improving the environment, achieving energy self-reliance, and expanding hydrogen infrastructure.

The company plans to diversify its biogas business and expand subsequent hydrogen projects based on the experience gained from building and operating the ECO-Hydrogen Station.
