Edeka Nord brings first hydrogen trucks onto the road

A few days ago, Edeka Nord’s first two trucks powered by green hydrogen started operating and are delivering goods to the markets for the first time.

Frank Breuer, Managing Director of Edeka Nord, says :

We are very pleased that we can continue to drive our pilot project forward with these two hydrogen trucks,

The new hydrogen trucks are an important component in the food retailer’s climate strategy. Compared to conventional diesel trucks, they do not cause any direct CO₂ emissions and help to significantly reduce the environmental impact of heavy goods traffic.

Klas Mahlstedt, Head of Logistics at Edeka Nord, explains :

With this initiative, we are making an active contribution to reducing our CO₂ footprint,

“Especially in the logistics industry, we have to take new paths to achieve the climate goals. The use of hydrogen trucks is an innovative step to make our transport sustainable.”

The pilot operation of the vehicles will be analyzed in the coming months. Among other things, the range, efficiency in daily use and the infrastructure for refueling with green hydrogen will be examined.

Helene Dahlke, responsible for sustainability at Edeka Nord. This also includes the field of electromobility, says :

We are consistently committed to sustainable solutions in logistics and will continue to evaluate innovative technologies and alternative forms of propulsion in order to minimize our ecological footprint,

The project is part of a series of measures that Edeka Nord is using to reduce its ecological footprint. In addition to hydrogen technology, the company is relying on energy-efficient warehouse locations, sustainable packaging concepts and regional supply chains for environmentally friendly retail logistics. In addition, the company’s entire truck fleet was converted to HVO diesel (hydrogenated vegetable oil) in January. HVO diesel is not based on fossil sources, but on plant residues, the further processing of which into diesel produces less CO₂ than diesel production from fossil crude oil.

It says,

With the launch of the innovative hydrogen trucks, Edeka Nord is making it clear that sustainable solutions in logistics are not only possible, but already a reality,

According to the published images, Edeka Nord is relying on the Hyundai XCient Fuel Cell model for hydrogen trucks , which uses a hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric drive.
