Egypt – Abu Qir Fertilizers mulls green hydrogen project with Total.

Egypt’s state-run Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Industries said it is studying a project to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia in cooperation with French oil and gas giant Total.

The company’s decision came after a board meeting held it added in a bourse filling.

Green hydrogen is a zero-carbon fuel made by electrolysis by using renewable power from wind and solar to split water into hydrogen and oxygen without burning fossils.

Egypt has been considering using green hydrogen as a cleaner energy source to integrate into its energy mix by 2035.

In October last year, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), Norwegian renewable energy producer Scatec, Orascom Construction, and Fertiglobe signed an agreement aimed at jointly developing a 50-100MW green hydrogen facility as feedstock for green ammonia production.

The facility will be built near EBIC, Fertiglobe’s ammonia production facility in Egyptian Suez Canal city of Ain Al Sokhna. It will be mainly comprising of a 100 MW PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) electrolyzer.
