Egypt to open first green hydrogen plant in November 2022.

Egypt plans to launch its first green hydrogen plant in November 2022 to coincide with its hosting of the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference, said chairman of the Egyptian sovereign fund.

The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE), Norwegian renewable energy producer Scatec, Fertiglobe, and Orascom Construction are jointly developing a 50-100MW green hydrogen facility as feedstock for green ammonia production according to an agreement signed back in October.

Speaking at an economic conference in Cairo, TSFE chief executive Ayman Soliman said the green ammonia will be the optimal green fuel Egypt seeks to use to reduce the emission footprint from air and maritime transport.

The facility will be located near EBIC, Fertiglobe’s ammonia production facility in Egyptian Suez Canal city of Ain Al Sokhna. It will be mainly consisting of a 100 MW PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) electrolyzer.

Orascom said in a statement back in October.

the largest independently owned facility globally when it comes online and the first electrolyzer in Egypt, placing the project at the forefront of future green hydrogen production.
