Renewable energies are climate-friendly, practically unlimited and therefore an essential cornerstone of our future energy supply.
In this context, hydrogen as an energy carrier is becoming increasingly prominent. It has enormous climate protection potential, because its use does not produce any harmful greenhouse gases. In addition, renewable energies can be stored and transported as hydrogen. Using the existing natural gas network for this purpose is the obvious choice – Germany alone has a gas network more than 500,000 km long.
Making hydrogen energy available to everyone via the gas distribution networks
The idea of feeding hydrogen into the existing gas network, at least proportionally, is more present than ever, especially in view of the current insecurity of natural gas supplies.
In one project in Baden-Wuerttemberg, for example, a localized part of the existing gas network is to be separated from the rest of the network like an island and gradually supplied with up to 30 percent hydrogen. In the medium to long term, this proportion is certain to increase.
While materials in gas supply or in gas appliances and systems are certified by DVGW according to EN 682 or EN 549, there is as of now almost no experience available for elastomers in hydrogen, especially when it comes to the actual functionality / permeation of the components.
Material solutions from KRAIBURG for climate-neutral gas supply
The DVGW has meanwhile drawn up a certification program for the contact of materials with hydrogen. This program uses a suitable test method to determine the permeability of hydrogen in elastomer materials – depending on the elastomer, significant differences are to be expected here.
In order to be prepared for future requirements, we have submitted our proven compounds from the most important hardness range, which are already certified according to EN 682 or EN 549, to the DVGW for testing. The type examination certificates are currently being extended by the corresponding note of the hydrogen permeability test.
