On behalf of the city council, the councilor for the City Model, Decent Housing and Sustainability, Neus Truyol; the Councilor for Economic Promotion and Employment, Jordi Vilà, and the manager of the EMT, Mateu Marcús.

After the inaugural act, attendees have been able to test the new vehicles on a tour from Plaça de Cort to the Consolat. The EMT will be the first client of the Lloseta green hydrogen plant, the first renewable hydrogen industrial plant in Spain, which is part of the Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca project, led by Enagás Renovable and ACCIONA Energía.

Jose Hila, the mayor has valued:

The City Council’s courageous commitment to mobility due to its transformative capacity.

“Today we are sending a clear message and turning Palma into a national benchmark, since we are the second city in the State with green hydrogen buses.”

“We ran into an EMT with old vehicles and we’ve turned it around. Our commitment to innovation has been clear, and this has been possible thanks to coordination and our ability to reach agreements”.

During the presentation, Francina Armengol recalled that “since 2015 in the Balearic Islands we have made a commitment to a just energy transition in a leading way” and stated that “we are making a revolution in mobility” with measures such as the one presented today, electrification of the train, the expansion of the rail network or the transformation of the intercity bus concessions in Mallorca.

Juan Pedro Yllanes, The Vice-President of the Government pointed out that:

This collaboration with Palma City Council demonstrates the Government’s new commitment to zero-emission collective transport.

“We continue to build a city with better air quality for the benefit of all citizens, and we do so with a new fuel produced on the Islands. The green hydrogen produced at the Lloseta plant will play an important role in the process of promoting the energy transition and we know that it will serve as an example for other island territories, as the President of the European Commission, Úrsula von der Leyen, said.”

“The Balearic Islands are once again at the forefront in the process of decarbonising mobility and I would like to remind you that we became the first territory in southern Europe to produce this renewable and green fuel”.

Joan Groizard, general director of the IDAE, has pointed out that these buses represent:

The first material result of the first renewable hydrogen industrial plant in Spain and southern Europe and contribute to building a renewable hydrogen ecosystem on the island of Mallorca, through promote sustainable mobility, to meet Spain’s environmental objectives and to the emergence of our country as an international hub for green hydrogen.

“An objective to which the PRTR aid lines that the IDAE has open at this time contribute, endowed with more than 400 million euros for pioneering and unique renewable hydrogen projects and to promote the value chain of this energy vector.”

Antón Martínez, CEO of Enagás Renovable, highlighted that:

The main objective of the European Green Hysland initiative, coordinated by Enagás Renovable and which enabled the construction of the first renewable hydrogen industrial plant in Spain in Mallorca to be promoted, is decarbonisation.

“This start-up of the hydrogen buses in Palma is a decisive step in this regard”.

Belén Linares, president of the council of Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca and Director of Innovation at ACCIONA Energy, said:

The commissioning of these buses marks a great milestone for the Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca project as it is the first offtaker in the field of mobility at our green hydrogen plant in Lloseta.

“This initiative is a paradigm of ACCIONA Energy’s commitment to decarbonisation and our commitment to development and research to design innovative solutions to the main challenges of our time.”

Characteristics

The new EMT green hydrogen buses represent a further step in Palma’s commitment to sustainable mobility and new fuels, becoming the second Spanish city, after Barcelona, to have a fleet of vehicles powered by green hydrogen batteries .

In total, the EMT has acquired five 12-meter green hydrogen buses that were tendered for an amount of 4,832,135 euros (VAT included). The vehicles have been manufactured by the Solaris company in the Polish city of Poznan, and have a more user-friendly design, in addition to integrating new braking systems.

The new bus model has been financed by the Government through the Capital Law and is part of the European Green Hysland project, which also includes Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca and whose objective is the deployment of the necessary infrastructures to build a renewable hydrogen ecosystem on the island of Mallorca, as well as contributing to the environmental objectives set by the Government of the Balearic Islands on the islands .

The European Union, through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, has committed 10 million euros to the execution of this project, which has also received funding from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. within the framework of the Moves Singular Projects program.

Second phase of renewal of the EMT Palma fleet

These are the first hydrogen vehicles that the Solaris brand will put into operation in Spain and their main advantage is the fact that they do not generate emissions and are quieter, creating a much friendlier experience for the user thanks to the interior traction system with a smoother ride. . Likewise, the new hydrogen buses have a regenerative braking system that allows them to recover energy and the batteries to be charged at each stop and stop.

The new hydrogen buses are part of the second phase of renewal of the EMT Palma vehicle fleet, which is progressively incorporating up to 65 new vehicles. Once this phase is complete, EMT Palma will have renewed more than 90 percent of its fleet since 2015.

Highlights:

  • The new 12-meter vehicles will be put into circulation starting next week on different lines and are part of the 5 that the EMT has acquired
  • The EMT will be the first client of the Lloseta green hydrogen plant, the first renewable hydrogen industrial plant in Spain
  • The new vehicles were awarded for 4.8 million euros and are financed by the Capital Law, the European Green Hysland project and the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving
