EQTEC partners with Wood for waste-to-hydrogen solution at Southport project.
EQTEC PLC (AIM:EQT) said it will develop a multi-technology, waste-to-energy project at Southport Hybrid Energy Park in Merseyside with partner Wood.
The technology company signed a letter of intent with Wood to collaborate on the design and deployment of a clean, waste-to-hydrogen solution during the second phase of the development of the Southport project.
EQTEC announced a cooperation agreement with Anaergia for the first phase of the project to develop a waste processing facility, an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, combined heat and power (CHP) engines and a 2MW battery storage facility.
For phase 2 of the project, EQTEC had been working on a plan to add its synthesis gas technology to convert 25,000 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) per year into an estimated 2.5-3.0 megawatts electricity (MWe) of clean electricity.
EQTEC and Wood have now agreed to co-develop an RDF-to-clean hydrogen solution that would replace or augment the phase 2 RDF-to-electricity solution.
The RDF-to-hydrogen solution would combine EQTEC’s syngas technology with Wood’s VESTA syngas-to-hydrogen technology. The plan is subject to further planning permission, the company noted.
With both phase 1 and phase 2 solutions in place, the Southport plant is expected to export to the grid the equivalent of 20% or more of the facility’s energy requirement, EQTEC said.
Jeff Vander Linden,, EQTEC COO, commenting on the collaboration with Wood said:
Our joint efforts at Southport with Wood will not only generate a unique, waste-to-hydrogen solution, but will also introduce the Southport community to a solution for clean, circular, sustainable energy from waste.
“The future of renewable energy will be a mixed economy with diverse technologies, and even the relatively compact Southport plant will demonstrate that. Such projects are at the cutting edge of innovation in the UK. We look forward to these and future opportunities with Wood to demonstrate successful, sustainable cleantech in practice.”
In a separate statement, EQTEC said its Deeside WTV subsidiary and Logik Developments Limited have agreed to further extend the date for completing their previously announced share purchase agreement (SPA).
The SPA relates to the currently approved 182,000 tonne waste reception plant along with 2MW anaerobic digestion facility and a 9.9 MWe EQTEC Advanced Gasification Technology facility at Deeside in Flintshire.
EQTEC said it is in the final stage of talks to appoint engineering company Black and Veatch for the powertrain front end engineering design (FEED) which follows the EQTEC gasification plant.
It also said talks for the minimum £15mln sale of the project special purpose vehicle (SPV) are progressing, with a number of parties engaged at due diligence stage.
