EUGINE and EUTurbines presented their “H2-Ready” approach for converting gas power plants into hydrogen.

Hydrogen power plants can complement wind and solar power to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply. During an online event organized, EUGINE and EUTurbines publicly presented their “H2-Ready” approach for converting gas power plants for their use with hydrogen. This industry initiative will help investors and policymakers identify future-proof gas power plants.

Tatiana Márquez Uriarte, member of the cabinet of EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, opened the event and welcomed the EUGINE and EUTurbines H2-Ready initiative:

It is very important for the energy industry not to be locked into stranded investments and have the technology that is already or can, with very small interventions, be ready for working with new types of gases.

“This is something that we really appreciate”, she said.

Hermann Kröger, Senior Vice-President at MAN Energy Solutions and EUGINE President, presenting the H2-Ready definition:

Most plants today are still optimised to run on natural gas.

“H2-Ready means that, whenever sufficient hydrogen is available, the plants can easily and at moderate costs be adapted to operate with hydrogen. By this, they will be working in a climate-neutral way and avoid carbon lock-in. Indeed, gas power plants are not competing with, but complementing renewables – they provide reliable power and ensure the security of supply.”

Thomas Thiemann, Senior Vice-President at Siemens Energy and EUTurbines President,
closed the event by reminding that

The final switch to climate-neutral operation requires that, apart from making the technology hydrogen-ready, the plants are connected to the necessary hydrogen infrastructure.”

“A framework that makes hydrogen power attractive for investors and power plant operators is also needed. Only then we will succeed in making the whole of power generation really sustainable.”
