Faber is a key player in Italy’s energy transition: its hydrogen storage systems have been chosen for numerous strategic projects across the country.
Faber, a global leader in the design, manufacturing, and testing of high-pressure cylinders and storage systems, proudly announces its involvement in a number of important national projects for the development of green hydrogen. Thanks to its consolidated experience and cutting-edge technologies, the company has been selected as a preferred supplier for multiple strategic initiatives, also supported by public funding, including those provided by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
A central role in the Italian hydrogen supply chain
Thanks to decades of experience and a significant commitment to research and development, Faber has brought to market storage solutions that stand out for their flexibility, safety, and performance. A distinctive feature of Faber’s offering is the superior fatigue resistance of its tanks, the result of extensive in-house research. This feature allows its storage systems to ensure a longer operating life than competitors and better performance over time, extending the useful life of the storage facilities and, consequently, of the facilities in which they are installed. This is a key competitive advantage for public and private operators seeking safe, durable, and sustainable infrastructure.
After years of success on international markets, with plants installed in Europe, Japan, South Korea, and North America, Faber is now making a concrete and decisive contribution to the growth of the hydrogen supply chain in Italy, a crucial sector for decarbonization and achieving European climate goals. Participation in the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley (NAHV) project , of which Faber is a technological partner, represents a further element of prestige and demonstrates the company’s ability to collaborate with institutions, businesses, and research centers to develop an integrated and competitive renewable hydrogen ecosystem.
Alice Orsi, Faber’s Sales Manager for the Hydrogen Sector, said:
The international recognition of our technology, based on high standards of safety and reliability, is now further confirmed in Italy, where we are involved in projects of great strategic importance for the country’s energy future,
“We are proud to contribute our expertise to a process of energy transformation and industrial development that represents one of the most urgent priorities at the national level.”
The main projects on the national territory
Among the most significant initiatives currently underway is the project promoted by APT Gorizia , entrusted to the Temporary Consortium of Companies composed of SOL SpA and CEDEM Scarl, for the construction of an integrated green hydrogen production and distribution plant at the new operational headquarters in Monfalcone. The heart of the plant is a 350 kW electrolyzer powered by a dedicated 500 kW photovoltaic system, enabling the on-site production of approximately 180 kg of hydrogen per day. The hydrogen is then compressed to medium and high pressure and stored in modular systems designed to refuel at least eight fuel cell buses, intended to operate in the urban and suburban areas of the Gorizia area. Faber is the exclusive supplier of the medium and high pressure storage systems, providing its advanced technological solutions, capable of ensuring safety and operational flexibility, essential elements for service continuity and compliance with stringent regulatory requirements.
Another outstanding project is the Hydrogen Hub Trieste , promoted by AcegasApsAmga, one of the first industrial hubs in Italy dedicated to green hydrogen, funded by the PNRR and the European Horizon Europe program. This hub, located in a converted industrial area near the Hestambiente waste-to-energy plant, includes a 5 MW electrolyzer powered by a 4.8 MWp photovoltaic system and a 2 MWh electrical storage system. Annual production is expected to be approximately 370 tons of renewable hydrogen, destined for a variety of sectors, from public transport to port logistics and energy-intensive industries. For this project, Faber supplied the 550-bar high-pressure storage systems, key components that ensure the safe storage and efficient management of the hydrogen produced.
As part of sustainable mobility, Autostrade del Brennero SpA is building a hydrogen refueling station at the Verona Nord Motorway Safety Center (CSA) along the A22 motorway. This strategic infrastructure is part of a broader plan to create a hydrogen distribution network along the Brenner-Modena corridor, thus supporting the decarbonization of road transport. The station will be equipped with compression and storage systems for approximately 3,500 kg of hydrogen, capable of refueling light and heavy vehicles and buses via 350 and 700 bar columns. Faber has been selected as the supplier of the high-pressure storage units, ensuring the provision of critical solutions to ensure operational continuity and infrastructure efficiency.
Finally, the H2 Farm project , promoted by Agrobiofert Srl in Priolo Gargallo (SR), represents a major initiative for the production of renewable hydrogen in Sicily, designed to support the decarbonization of the local agricultural and industrial sectors. The plant will be equipped with two 1 MW PEM electrolyzers, powered by renewable sources, and compression and storage systems with pressures up to 450 bar. Faber is also supplying the high-pressure storage units, offering its expertise to ensure safety and optimal performance. The initiative, part of the regional “Hydrogen Valleys” program and financed with approximately €10.5 million in public funds, is expected to be operational by 2026, helping to create new economic and employment opportunities in Sicily.
Commitment and prospects for the future
Thanks to its extensive experience in the design and construction of high-pressure storage systems, Faber is a qualified partner to support public and private sector projects in line with European decarbonization and sustainable development directives. The technological solutions adopted guarantee high standards of safety, operational flexibility, and scalability, fully meeting the needs of a rapidly changing energy system.
Faber thus reaffirms its ongoing commitment to developing innovative and sustainable technologies, actively contributing to the construction of an integrated hydrogen supply chain, fully consistent with national and European objectives for environmental protection and economic growth.
