Fawley reveals plan for hydrogen in move that could inject £10m boost
Plans have been unveiled for an energy production facility on part of the former Fawley Power Station site.
The Fawley Green Hydrogen project aims to supply up lower-carbon hydrogen to the ExxonMobil Fawley refinery.
Hynamics, a subsidiary of the EDF Group, is preparing to submit planning applications in the coming months with potential for on-site construction to start next year subject to a final investment decision.
If consented and developed, the company said the project could provide around 200 construction jobs and 100 direct and indirect jobs once operational, adding up to £10million to the regional economy per year.
The facility would help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at ExxonMobil’s petrochemical complex by around 100,000 tonnes per year through the production of up to 120 megawatts of green hydrogen.
A new dedicated pipeline would need to be constructed to link the hydrogen production facility with the refinery site.
Green hydrogen would be produced by using electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, with the hydrogen gas compressed and stored on site before being transported to the Exxon Mobil refinery.
The team behind Fawley Green Hydrogen is hosting a drop-in event for the community to learn about the plans and ask questions at Jubilee Hall in The Square, Fawley, from 3.30pm to 7.30pm on Thursday, January 8.
Project director Matthew Williamson, said:
We welcome feedback from local residents and stakeholders during the consultation period and are keen to listen to local views.
“We look forward to meeting those who are interested at our event on 8 January, where we will be available to discuss the Fawley Green Hydrogen proposals in more detail.”
The project from Hynamics presents the first detailed scheme to emerge since a new vision for the wider Fawley Waterside site came to light.
As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Fawley Waterside Ltd is working up fresh proposals under a major planning reset for the former Fowley Power Station land.
This comes after Fawley Waterside Ltd confirmed that planning applications 1,500 homes alongside commercial and community facilities, and a school had been withdrawn in July 2024.
