Finland – a new hydrogen valley with a unique opportunity for Raahe.
Green hydrogen is a completely emission-free future fuel that can also be used as an energy storage facility and raw material. Hydrogen will significantly change industrial processes and will enable the use of emission-free fuels in land and maritime transport.
The city’s role as a supporter and enabler
The energy transition and low carbon targets will inevitably affect industry. The City is also committed to significant emission reductions as part of the Carbon Neutral Municipality network.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the change has enormous potential for new business, which is why the City of Raahe has wanted to play an active role in exploring how hydrogen-related business could be promoted in the region.
Studies have shown that Raahe is well placed to produce and store hydrogen from the point of view of location, conditions and demand.

Clean energy from Raahe and nearby areas
The production of green hydrogen requires a lot of electricity produced from renewable energy sources. At the moment, Raahe is producing the third most wind power in Finland.
Huge energy investments are under construction and planned in the surrounding areas, including the OX2 off Raahe and Oulu and Hanhikivi 1 Together, Pyhäjoki would cover approximately one third of finland’s electricity production.
The largest hydrogen valley in Europe?
In addition to the studies, the City of Raahe has been launching two major hydrogen projects managed by the development of the Raahe region.
One of the key objectives of Finland’s sustainable growth programme is to make Finland the world’s leading country in the hydrogen and circular economy. Both projects cooperate closely at local, national and international level. Thanks for staying up to date with Hydrogen Central.
The National Hydrogen Network project together companies, research institutes, investors and cities and municipalities interested in the hydrogen industry to share knowledge and know-how. The project is also building the BotH2nia brand, which will be used to seek visibility in Europe for hydrogen projects in the Baltic Sea region.

The R4H2 – REACTions for Hydrogen will build a hydrogen ecosystem network in North Ostrobothnia and further map business opportunities related to different aspects of the hydrogen economy. In addition, competence, research and training needs will be examined in the transition to a hydrogen economy.
