First step towards hydrogen for Northwest Overijssel and Flevoland
Government and business communities in Northwest Overijssel and Flevoland are taking a significant step together to make hydrogen available in the region. The partners are jointly requesting a Valve Study Agreement from HyNetwork Services.
To bring hydrogen to Northwest Overijssel and Flevoland, a connection to the national hydrogen network is required. This can be done using a T-piece as an extension of the hydrogen network, so that our region can also make use of it. The first step is now the VSA. This allows the exploration into the feasibility, location, and costs of a connection to the hydrogen network to begin.
Regional connection to national network
Hydrogen offers great opportunities in this region. It provides greater energy security, helps companies operate more cleanly, and strengthens the energy system for the future. Hydrogen is a good substitute for natural gas in factories and logistics. By doing so, we reduce emissions and help companies comply with climate regulations. Hydrogen can also be stored, ensuring we have energy even when there is little or no sun or wind.
By joining forces now, we can make faster progress. We will then gain clarity regarding what is needed in terms of pipelines, storage, costs, and planning. The HyNetwork study is expected to be completed in early 2028.
Cooperation
Multiple municipalities, provinces, and companies in Overijssel and Flevoland are participating in this project. Together, they are ensuring that the region is ready for the energy of the future. The participating partners are: the Municipality of Zwartewaterland, the Municipality of Zwolle, the Municipality of Kampen, the Municipality of Dalfsen, the Municipality of Staphorst, the Municipality of Lelystad, the Municipality of Dronten, Oost NL, Industriële Club Kampen, Condor Group, Scania, BEWI Synprodo, Stichting Duurzame Koekoekspolder, Schagen Groep, H2-GO BV, Green Loop Energy, the Province of Flevoland, and the Province of Overijssel.
Why this step is necessary
In Overijssel, we need sustainable alternatives to natural gas, especially for high-temperature production processes. Hydrogen is one of the few realistic options for this. It can also be an interesting alternative for logistics, particularly for longer distances. By connecting to the national hydrogen network, Northwest Overijssel is preparing for the energy transition that will accelerate in the coming years.
Next steps
After the submission of the VSA to HyNetwork Services, the partners are working on various follow-up steps:
- A joint exploration into which areas are promising for hydrogen supply and what infrastructure is required for this.
- Continue the dialogue with entrepreneurs about economic opportunities for the industry in the Zwolle region and about stimulating demand for hydrogen.
- Exploring the financial possibilities for the next steps.
- Investigating the opportunities of hydrogen for inland shipping and road transport.
After the completion of the Valve Study by HyNetwork Services, the partners will decide on further steps.
Hydrogen in Overijssel
Earlier this year, a broad Twente-German consortium signed a contract with the German grid operator Thyssengas for the construction of a connection to the German hydrogen network. In addition, the province is working with partners on a second VSA in the Deventer region. For that region too, the availability of hydrogen is important for entrepreneurs and a robust future energy system.
