Great success for the hydrogen economy in Baden-Württemberg: As the first project in Germany, the federal government approved the “BoschPowerUnits” project as part of the multi-billion European IPCEI Hydrogen (Important Projects of Common European Interest). It is about the initial industrialization of stationary fuel cell systems. Federal Minister Robert Habeck personally handed over the grant notification during his visit to the Bosch Research Center in Renningen

Thekla Walker, Minister of Energy say:

This project from Bosch is an important contribution to the Energy transition and of outstanding industrial policy importance. It strengthens the entire hydrogen value chain in the country; other companies and research institutions will benefit.”

The minister also hopes to build up important skills and jobs in the field of future-relevant hydrogen technologies. “Because one thing is clear: high-performance hydrogen technologies are drivers of innovation in many areas.”

The state contributes 30 percent to the financing

With the confirmation from Berlin, the funding is now officially sealed. The project, which is being implemented at various locations in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Saarland, had already started at the beginning of 2022 after the approval of an early start of the measures at the company’s own risk.

The state of Baden-Württemberg is contributing around 27.5 million euros (30 percent) to the financing of the project. The federal government contributes 70 percent (for the Baden-Württemberg part around 64.6 million euros).

background information

SOFC technology represents a future technology that can be used to shape the transformation in the energy transition. The highly efficient, stationary fuel cell systems based on SOFC (= Solid Oxide Fuel Cells) for the modular and networked generation of electricity and heat are versatile.

Today they can be operated with biogas or natural gas and hydrogen admixtures – and in the future with pure hydrogen. This allows market access via an existing gas infrastructure and the development of a hydrogen economy. The electrical efficiency is very high at more than 60 percent and an overall efficiency of over 85 percent.

The overall project is being implemented at various locations in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Saarland. The development work is to take place mainly in the Stuttgart area, with production in the plants in Bamberg, Homburg and Wernau near Esslingen. The development, production and testing of stationary fuel cell systems at the Bosch locations in Stuttgart-Feuerbach, Renningen and Wernau will sustainably strengthen the economic and technological location of Baden-Württemberg and its competitiveness.

The country is pursuing the goal of establishing itself as a leading location in hydrogen and fuel cell technology. The ‘BoschPowerUnits’ project makes a very specific contribution to the development and establishment of large-scale production of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies.
