Germany to award €80M for construction of electrolysis plants for transport sector.

The Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) is funding electrolysis plants for the production of green hydrogen for the transport sector and is providing up to 80 million euros for this purpose. A corresponding call for funding was published.

Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport said:

Hydrogen and fuel cell applications are a future technology with great potential for the transport sector.

“We must use all technologies to achieve our climate protection goals. Hydrogen is an important addition to battery-electric mobility, especially when it comes to heavy loads and long ranges. Truck manufacturers assume that by 2030 almost every fifth newly registered commercial vehicle will run on hydrogen. We support the use of hydrogen in transport to make mobility and logistics climate-friendly.”

“The aim is to strengthen the entire hydrogen ecosystem, increase supply and demand, and position the transport sector as a reliable and affluent customer. That is why we are supporting the construction of electrolysis plants with a total of up to 80 million euros to ramp up the production of green hydrogen for transport.”

Electrolysis plants for the production of hydrogen for the transport sector are being funded. The construction of electrolysis plants with a minimum electrical output of the entire plant of 1 megawatt is eligible for funding. The prerequisite is that the plant is operated with 100 percent electricity from renewable energy sources. Applications for funding can be submitted until 28.04.2023.

The call for funding is part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Phase II, which runs until 2026, and is part of the funding guideline for market activation measures. This is intended to prepare for a later market ramp-up. Products that are technically ready for the market but not yet competitive are supported.

Information on how to apply, templates, other documents required for the application and a checklist for the application can be found on the website of the project executing agency.

Interested parties also have the opportunity to inform themselves about the new call for funding on 24 February 2023 in an online seminar of the project management agency and the programme company NOW GmbH. Registration for the online seminar is possible here.
