Germany – Schnieder: We are laying the foundation for a reliable hydrogen refueling network for heavy-duty vehicles
The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) has issued a positive interim report on the funding call published in January 2026 for the development of an initial network for refueling heavy-duty vehicles with hydrogen in Germany. By the submission deadline of June 30, 2026, the project management agency had received 526 applications with a total funding request of €455 million. This includes 71 applications for refueling stations and 455 applications for vehicles and vehicle fleets. The BMV is providing a total of €220 million for this purpose.

The strong response to our funding call for the development of an initial network for refueling heavy-duty vehicles with hydrogen in Germany shows that our approach is coming at exactly the right time. Because the industry is focusing on hydrogen mobility for heavy-duty trucks, in addition to electromobility. With our combined funding of a large number of refueling stations and vehicles, we are providing the crucial impetus to overcome the chicken-and-egg problem. This lays the foundation for the rapid ramp-up of a climate-friendly hydrogen truck fleet. In this way, we strengthen innovation, planning certainty, and value creation in Germany.
Even in a continuing challenging market environment, the funding is perceived as an important boost for the industry. The broad participation, including leading manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles, underscores the industrial policy significance of the project.
The National Hydrogen Council (NWR) also emphasizes the relevance of the funding call in its current information and policy paper on hydrogen demand, dated June 18, 2026. He describes it as a potential “game-changer” for market ramp-up and sees it as the foundation for building a basic network of hydrogen refueling stations by around 2030.

Based on this, a hydrogen truck fleet of several thousand vehicles is possible by 2030,
The selection of projects will be made through a competitive process based on predefined criteria. Prioritized applications are expected to receive approval in the second half of the year.
