Greek gas grid operator DESFA teams up with 5 operators for hydrogen link to Germany
Greek gas grid operator DESFA has partnered with five transmission operators from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia to develop a vast hydrogen transmission network extending from Greece to Germany.
According to sources, planning is still in the very early stages, focused on building a shared understanding among the operators to further develop the concept.
The core objective is to supply hydrogen to the high-demand German market, which has already set ambitious consumption targets.
Current discussions center on leveraging existing gas infrastructure where possible and identifying the new infrastructure needed to bring this project to fruition.
Romania faces the most significant challenge in this project, as its network requires substantial upgrades to meet the standards necessary for hydrogen transport.
In Greece, the existing network can be utilized, at least initially; however, DESFA is advancing plans to develop a parallel pipeline alongside the main system specifically for hydrogen transport.
This project is currently excluded from DESFA’s ten-year development plan, deemed unnecessary under present market conditions.
However, the operator’s ten-year development plan does include an Amyntaio-Komnina pipeline, a hydrogen transmission initiative in the country’s north that could potentially be integrated into the larger network in the future.
