Green hydrogen for a low carbon beer – A project by Fertiberia and Heineken Spain awarded by the Observatory of Innovation in Mass Consumption of the Institut Cerdá.

When you order a beer, think about its carbon footprint, or not… Replacing natural gas with green hydrogen is the pioneering project that Fertiberia and Heineken Spain have carried out to reduce emissions in the cultivation of brewing barley and make you stop thinking what impact your beers have with friends.

The project, based on the use of the first Impact Zero low-carbon fertilizers produced by Fertiberia, has been awarded by the Mass Consumption Innovation Observatory of the Institut Cerdá, thanks to its 7th edition.

To obtain a manufacturing process for the Impact Zero line, natural gas is replaced by green hydrogen as an energy source, which reduces its carbon footprint to a minimum.

Likewise, and within the framework of this project, both companies promote the use of the most avant-garde technologies of agriculture 4.0 (digital and agronomic, among others), since they are based on big data to achieve the most efficient application techniques. .

This low-carbon beer project, which represents a breakthrough in the brewery’s Decidedly Heineken sustainability roadmap , is focused on the ambition of reducing CO2e emissions by 30% in its value chain, thus advancing to be net zero in 2040.

To achieve this, aware that its production barely accounts for 9% of the total CO2e emissions of its activity, it concentrates its efforts in Spain on the areas that have the greatest impact, such as packaging or agriculture.

Innovation in mass consumption

To achieve this sustainability of obtaining a low-carbon beer, Fertiberia has become the ideal partner to face this challenge as it is the only company capable of producing low-carbon plant nutrition solutions on a large scale to support a project of this kind. wingspan.

It is also the first company in its sector in the world that has committed to reducing its net to zero emissions by 2035 . And everything revolves around one key: achieving this goal lies in the production of fertilizers from renewable energy sources, a step that has already been taken in its industrial center in Puertollano , which will be followed in the future by the rest of the plants. in Spain (Palos de la Frontera, Avilés and Sagunto).

All of this has been presented within the framework of the conference Innovation as an axis of development and competitiveness in the mass consumption chain , which has served as a framework for presenting the results of this new edition of the Innovation Observatory.

100% renewable beer

The four drivers that have driven this year’s event have been Sustainability, Social and Territorial Cohesion, Focus on the Consumer and Efficiency in the Supply Chain, highlighting initiatives that have demonstrated in 2023 their ability to respond with innovation to the challenges of the current context and consumer demands.

We Are Decidedly Heineken is the brewery’s strong commitment to the social and environmental environment, with the goal of brewing beers using 100% renewable energy in production by 2025.

Among the brewer’s goals is to be net zero throughout its value chain by 2040, maintain the balance of the direct water footprint , reduce waste as much as possible and maximize the circularity of our packaging.
