Green hydrogen plant to be built in Switzerland Schwyz canton.

Swiss energy supplier EBS Energie AG, IWB Industrielle Werke Basel and construction company A. Kaeppeli’s Soehne AG are planning to build a plant with a capacity of 5 MW-6 MW to produce green hydrogen in the canton of Schwyz for the decarbonisation of the local mobility sector.

The partners have submitted a planning application for the construction of a hydrogen plant and a filling station at the surfacing site in the village of Seewen, in the Schwyz municipality, IWB said.

By the end of 2024, the three companies plan to start producing hydrogen, using electricity from the Wernisberg hydropower plant.

Thanks to the proximity to the motorway connection, the hydrogen from the plant could be sold to the mobility sector, primarily for trucks, fed into the existing gas supply network of Ebs Erdgas + Biogas AG or used for the production of more climate-friendly coatings.

The facility is expected to be capable of producing hydrogen enough to power trucks to run 11.1 million km per year.

For the implementation of the project, the partners have founded two companies — ebs Hydrogen AG, which will be responsible for the production of green hydrogen, and Kaeppeli Hydrogen AG to be in charge of the construction and operation of hydrogen filling stations.

The investment costs for the project amount to CHF 16.8 million (USD 17.27m/EUR 16.97m).
